The University wants to honour the late literary icon
The University of Abuja on Friday appealed for support in the building of Chinua Achebe Library/Reading Room in the school.
Vicky
Sylvester, the Head of Department of English and Literary Studies, made
the plea in an interview with News Agency of Nigerian in Abuja. She
said that the institution was appealing for support from individuals,
corporate organisations and government establishments.
She said that the institution would appreciate contributions toward the building, noting that “no assistance is small’’.
“The language laboratory is another structure that will be named after the literary icon.
“The building will be the only department central to the intellectual development of students in all disciplines,” she said.
She
said that the laboratory would serve other departments in the
Humanities Faculty and would be a lifetime investments in the Federal
Capital University.
The head of department said that the plan to
build the library was to honour the late literary icon for his
contributions to the development of African literature. She said that
the library would help resuscitate reading culture in the students.
“These
are lifetime investments in the Federal Capital University and the only
department central to the intellectual development of students in all
disciplines,’’ she said.
NAN reports that the department is working in collaboration with the Federal Road Safety Commission, FRSC, to honour the late literary icon, Chinua Achebe.
