North Yorkshire police are now appealing for members of the public to help them work out how the rubbish bag ended up outside the home at 10am on Tuesday.
It was handed in by the owners of the property after they discovered it on the same day the bins in that part of the city were due to be collected.
Officers think the sack of cash was left sometime during the morning.
Detectives did not release the exact sum of money that was in the bag, or the address.
Detective Inspector Andrea Kell of York CID, said: ‘This is a very unusual find which remains unexplained and we would like to find out where the money came from and rule out any criminal connection.’
Those with information should call York CID on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
