About 119 inmates of the Kirikiri Medium and Maximum prisons were on Wednesday released by the Chief Judge of Lagos State, Justice Ayotunde Phillips during visits to the prisons.
The visits to the prisons were part of activities marking the 2013/2014 legal year of the state judiciary.
Phillips, who lamented the continued rise of prison inmates,
described the visit as her third which was aimed at decongesting the
prisons of inmates who had been awaiting trial for many years.
She said, “This is my third visit here since I was sworn-in as the
CJ. I must say that despite my routine visits, the figures of inmates
keep rising.
“I admonish those of you who are fortunate to be on the roll today to refrain from crime. It will be painful if after your release, you are found wanting again and brought back here.
“It will be a mockery on me, and other members of the judiciary present here if you are brought back here again.”
The release of the prisoners is made pursuant to the provisions of
Section 1(1) of the Criminal Justice Release from Custody Special
Provision Act, CAP C40, 2007, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria.
