Lucky to be alive: Eugene Rakow (Picture: YouTube)
A careless carpenter had a miraculous escape after accidentally shooting himself in the heart with a nailgun.
Eugene Rakow, 58, was working on a neighbour’s decking when he fired the 3.5in spike into his chest, which missed his coronary artery by just 2mm.
The Minnesota man underwent open heart surgery last week to remove the foreign object and is already recovering back home with his family.
‘I was holding it up and I shot the nail in and the nail gun bounced, hit my chest and it went off again,’ he said.
‘Your body kind of goes into shock.  I could feel it gurgle a little, crunch a little. I knew it wasn’t good.’

He managed to call his wife Michelle who drove him to hospital for treatment.
‘The surgeon said I ought to buy a lottery ticket, you got to be the luckiest man alive,’ he added.
‘The surgeon said most people die right there. He said nine out of 10 won’t make it.’
