Hundreds of people have contacted the police with information over the disappearance of Madeleine McCann in an ‘overwhelming response’ to a fresh TV appeal, Scotland Yard has said.
Officers received more than 200 calls and 170 emails following last night’s BBC Crimewatch programme, with two callers giving the same name for the man shown on a new e-fit picture.
Senior investigating officer detective chief inspector Andy Redwood said he is ‘extremely pleased’ with the response to the programme.
‘The incident room is following up a number of enquiries,’ he said. ‘We will now take the time to follow these [up].’
He added: ‘Our appeal continues and later today I will be travelling to Holland, and tomorrow Germany, to continue the appeal for information.
‘Madeleine remains at the heart of everything we do and I will continue to update the McCann family as more information is received by the incident room.’
Madeleine McCann snatched in 'pre-planned' abduction, police tell Crimewatch appeal

Detectives now believe Madeleine, who went missing in 2007, was snatched in a well-planned abduction from her holiday apartment.
Mr Redwood said one reading of the evidence is that the kidnapping had ‘the hallmarks of a pre-planned abduction that would undoubtedly have involved reconnaissance’.
